With travel and the uncertainty of our every day lives, we all know that the best intentions may be confronted with unforeseen circumstances. With this in mind, we suggest, when making your travel arrangements with Linda that you request the travel protection plan that will be quoted exclusively for your travel.
The travel plan will included in coverage: 

  • DTE tuition, YES! the travel insurance will cover your tuition paid if you cancel the trip for unforeseen circumstances that are covered reasons on policy!
  • Any pre-paid non refundable  Airline fare
  • Any prepaid non refundable hotel room cost and/or hotel penalty applicable for cancellations
  • Coverages are based on meeting the criteria for “covered reasons for cancellations” which will be presented to you to fully review when you request the policy quote from Linda Mitchell.

AIRPORT:GCM – Owen Roberts International Airport
Most major airlines flying into GCM. Please check with your preferred airlines for schedules and fares that match your days and times as well as budget. Note: There are not any jetways from aircraft to terminal. You will deplane via elevated ramp to tarmac and guided into terminal and board from terminal across tarmac to ramp.

GCM IMMIGRATIONS Please complete the Immigration Form while in flight. Write legibly and keep all related travel documents together. Customer Service Agents are available to assist you on arrival. There are also arrival kiosks for immigrations and customs or you may proceed through visitors line to agent.
Note: even with kiosk you will have to go through the line to check out with immigrations agent.

Valid Passport – note that your passport must be valid 6+ months beyond the date of travel
Begin renewal process now if yourpassport expires within 6 months past your travel dates

TRANSPORTATION – AIRPORT TO HOTEL/RETURN: Transportation from airport/return. Taxi service is convenient, safe and well managed. Taxi drivers are friendly and full of great welcoming info! Upon exit from Immigrations and Customs, then baggage claims there is a large outer exit area. Private services have desks at the exit door. Pass by this area and exit out to the sidewalk where there will be a dispatcher for the taxi queue. Rates are by meter from airport. Taxis are lined up in long queue to meet each arrival flight. The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman is about 15 minute ride from airport. Taxi is approximately $30 one way payable when services are rendered. Inquire with bellman prior to departure date for taxi service return to airport. If you in a group larger than the vehicle in the taxi queue, simply ask for a vehicle to accommodate your group rather than taking more than one taxi. Taxi profession is managed by the Cayman Islands Government to ensure consistency of service and meter rates. Taxis are the best way to get around Grand Cayman! CURRENCY: The local currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$). Credit card transactions will be charged in USD. The USD is widely accepted throughout the islands. The CI$ is fixed to the USD at $1.25 USD to 1.00 CI$. USD is accepted, converted at time of payment – you can request USD in return. MC and VI are widely accepted. AX is lesser accepted. Discover and Diners Club are not accepted. Be sure to contact your card company for any associated fees and also to make them aware you may be doing international purchases.

MOBILE PHONES:  Please check with your provider for fees and international call and data programs. Many carriers have a per day add on that allows you to use your existing data and calling plan without roaming charges. 

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS: Cayman Islands use same electrical as US – no adapters needed

DEPARTURE DAY:

  • Please allow 3 hours for transport to airport, arrival, check in, baggage claim and security.
  • Please check with bellman at hotel prior to departure day to pre-arrange a taxi to ensure availability. Note: check with other attendees to share taxi for convenience and cost effectiveness
  • If your flight is delayed, do not delay your arrival to airport, airlines are only staffed prior to scheduled flight times. You must still check in according to the original departure time.
  • If you get SSSS – Secondary Screening Security Selection shown on your boarding pass it means you have been randomly chosen for additional security screening. When doing online check in you will not be allowed to access or print your boarding pass which many times indicates that you will have the SSSS when you arrive at airport. Your bags will be fully checked and scrutinized as well as your checked bag. This is not a Cayman Islands occurrence, this is by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security. There will also be a personal security check. IMPORTANT: Ensure that all your electronic devises are able to be powered on! Do not arrive at airport with low to dead battery on any electronic devises! Note: GCM airport security does not have TSA pre-check.
  • There are fast food style food and beverage outlets at airport with limited seating
  • There are duty free shops at airport. Remember if you purchase any liquids, alcohol etc and are taking a connecting flight, it must fit into your checked luggage when you make your connection, pass through immigrations and customs and re-check your luggage as you will also have to go through security again.
  • There are not any change areas for currency at airport – plan to change any Cayman currency prior to going to airport or use at airport outlets.
  • You will cross the tarmac and board the plane via elevated ramp by group called. There are no jetways at GCM airport
  • You will be required to clear Immigrations and Customs at your first point of entry when/if returning back into the United States. You will proceed to US Customs and Immigrations clearance, collect your luggage  and then re-check luggage if connecting on, pass back through security. Non-stop flights exit after clearing Immigrations and customs.
