Immigrations | Baggage Claim | Customs:
Upon arrival at GCM, you will enter the Immigrations hall for admittance procedures. An entry form will be provided during the flight. The Cayman Islands Dollar (currency code KYD) is the currency of the Cayman Islands. It is abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively CI$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents. local currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$) but transactions using non domestic credit cards will be charged in US$. The US dollar is widely accepted throughout the islands. CI$1.00 = USD$1.20.
Please be aware that most restaurants add on gratuity automatically. Always check your bill. Also be sure to notice on the menu if the pricing is in CI$ or USD$, restaurants may vary. When making a purchase the cost will be calculated into USD$ automatically. When departing the island ensure that you have used your CI$ accumulated. There is not an exchange kiosk at airport, though there is plenty of places to spend! CI$ cannot be exchanged in US for USD$
Renting a car during your stay provides the most flexibility when it comes to transportation. Visitors can get a temporary divers license at any rental car counter or at the police station. Visitors applying for a temporary driver’s license must be 21 years of age and hold a valid US license to drive. Driving on the left side of the road provides adventure and round-a-bouts provide good stories to tell when you return home. Car rentals available include Jeeps, Mini Vans, 4 doors, and SUV’s. Renting mopeds and scooters are also a great way to explore the islands on your own. Best scenario is to take a taxi to the hotel and then arrange for the car rental for the number of days you will need the car. Hertz Cayman is the most reliable and is located at The Ritz-Carlton. Pre-reserve via the link and then pick up your car by walking the short few minutes to the reservations counter there. Return car the day prior to departure to avoid the added task at airport.
All fun times must come to an end! Planning ahead for departure day makes it easier. Please be aware:
There is shopping and dining at GCM airport. Last minute souvenirs, duty free beverages, cigars and jewelry can be found here at same pricing as stores on island. Food concessions are limited to convenience foods like Subway and Wendys. The Brew Hut is a locally owned company.
GCM does not have jetways. To board the aircraft you will pass through the exit gate area, onto sidewalk, tarmac and up a ramp to plane. Passengers requiring assistance may request upon arrival at airport.
